Château de Versailles

On the train to Versailles

On the train to Versailles

From the heart of Paris
Bert jumps on a train
It’s off to Château de Versailles
His excitement is hard to contain!

Louis XIV outside Versailles

Louis XIV outside Versailles

A hunting lodge was built
In 1624
By Louis the thirteenth
And it would soon become more

Louis the fourteenth
Was the next king in line
He expanded upon the lodge
To make it a palace shrine

It became one of the largest
Palaces ever to be known
Over several decades
The grounds have grown & grown

Heading in!

Heading in!

The Golden Gate!

The Golden Gate!

There’s too much history
To be explained by me
From the French Revolution
To the royals having to flee

Louis-Phillipe proposed
In 1833
That Versailles become a museum
And so it came to be

Now as a tourist attraction
Its visited by 6 million a year
But is still used for political functions
For heads of state who gather here

As you walk through the palace
Marveling at the inside
Be sure to grab a map
Along with an audio guide

Gotta grab an audio guide!

Inside - glancing down the hall

Inside – glancing down the hall

Out back in the garden

Out back in the garden

Outside you’ll find the gardens
Which have expanded over time
Now they cover 800 acres
To miss them would be a crime

To see the entire grounds
You can rent a bike
Or just walk on foot
But beware it’s quite a hike

Amazing!

Amazing!

On the golf cart - driving around

On the golf cart – driving around

Bert rented a golf cart
And cruised around in style
Driving through the gardens
With an audio tour all the while

On the outskirts of the land

On the outskirts of the land

More buildings!

More buildings!

Going down the hill to see some fountains!

Going down the hill to see some fountains!

There are many fountains
Here on display
Some are timed with music
That run throughout the day

Be sure to see the Dragon
At the head of his lagoon
There’s also The Encelade Grove
And the large fountain of Neptune

The fountain of Apollo
Is in a central locale
You can also rent a kayak
To paddle the Grand Canal

Bert has been amazed
At everything today
He can’t wait to visit again!
But he must be on his way
